Scott McTominay appears ready to embrace a fresh challenge under new management at Napoli as he is poised to pen a new deal at the club. The Italians have reportedly rejected numerous bids for his services already, despite the transfer window not yet being officially open.
Interest from Premier League and Saudi Arabia
The former Manchester United midfielder has attracted two approaches from the Premier League and one from a Saudi Pro League club. However, neither Napoli nor McTominay seem keen on parting ways.
This summer presents another obstacle following Antonio Conte's departure from the club, though it does not appear to have put McTominay off. The former Chelsea and Tottenham manager confirmed his exit after Napoli narrowly beat Udinese 1-0 in their final match of the season on Sunday, securing second place behind champions Inter Milan.
McTominay's Impact at Napoli
Rasmus Hojlund netted the game's sole goal in Naples and finished as Napoli's top scorer with 12 Serie A goals. McTominay, 29, came second with 10 finishes of his own, and the pair ended up with a combined 30 goal involvements this term.
McTominay has clearly done enough to convince his bosses they should be prioritising his future, having already turned Hojlund's loan permanent. Major obstacles may need to be tackled this summer, however, after Conte hinted at the "poison" affecting Napoli from within.
Conte's Criticism of Napoli's Environment
"On Napoli I failed in one thing," Conte told reporters while sat alongside club owner Aurelio De Laurentiis following Sunday's win. "I wasn't able to bring compactness to Napoli and if you don't manage to do it, it becomes difficult to fight against other teams. I've seen a lot of poison and those who spread it are failures. Napoli doesn't need failures, those who need a like. It needs serious people who want to love the team, just like the fan who pays for the ticket, instead these people should stay away because they are harmful."
Conte acknowledged his shortcomings in failing to forge the unity he had envisaged. He also took issue with De Laurentiis' assertion that Napoli would have pipped Inter to the title had injuries not taken their toll this season. McTominay did his utmost to plug that gap but could only achieve so much given Napoli netted 31 goals fewer than Inter in Serie A. Fellow ex-United man Romelu Lukaku was also frozen out by Conte for virtually the entirety of the campaign following a falling-out.
McTominay's New Contract
Tuttosport has reported McTominay has been deemed untouchable by Napoli, who have no intention of letting him go after just two seasons. He currently has only two years left to run on his existing deal at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. Given just how pivotal he has swiftly become to the club's prospects, it is hardly surprising Napoli are so keen to tie him down to a new agreement. Reports suggest the club has tabled a significant pay rise on a contract that could see him remain in Naples until 2031.
United were linked with a McTominay reunion last summer after their academy graduate was named Serie A MVP in 2025. The identities of the two English clubs circling this summer remain unknown for the time being.
For his part, the midfield powerhouse revealed earlier this year that he is "extremely happy" in his current surroundings, where he could see himself for "a long time." The club's next managerial appointment will play a crucial role in determining whether that sense of satisfaction endures as he sets his sights on further success under a new head coach.
