Mets Beat Tigers 10-2 After Umpire Collision Changes Game
Mets Beat Tigers 10-2 After Umpire Collision

The New York Mets secured a commanding 10-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday, a game dramatically altered by an unusual collision between Tigers infielder Colt Keith and umpire Rob Drake.

Key Incident in the Fifth Inning

The pivotal moment occurred at the top of the fifth inning at Citi Field. With the Mets leading 3-2, Keith attempted to score from third base after a throw was mishandled. As he dashed toward home plate, he collided with third base umpire Rob Drake, sending both Drake and Keith's helmet to the ground. Despite the collision, Keith stayed on his feet but was thrown out at home by Mets pitcher Freddy Peralta, ending the inning and preserving New York's lead.

Had Keith scored, the game would have been tied 3-3. Instead, the Mets capitalized, scoring seven more runs to secure a 10-2 victory.

How the Play Unfolded

The chaotic sequence began when Peralta allowed a single to Tigers' Riley Greene. Keith, who had started on first base, advanced to third before a throw from Carson Benge was spilled by Brett Baty. Seeing an opportunity, Keith headed for home, only for Drake, positioned to make a call at third, to block his path. The collision did not stop Keith, but the delay allowed Peralta to throw him out at home.

Detroit failed to score again for the remainder of the game, while the Mets' offense surged behind AJ Ewing, who made an impressive major league debut.

Ewing's Stellar Debut

Ewing provided the offensive spark the Mets needed. He laced an RBI triple in the seventh inning for his first career hit, becoming the first Mets player to record a triple in his big league debut. He also walked three times, scored twice, drove in two runs, stole a base, and flied out to the center-field warning track.

Catcher Francisco Alvarez doubled in the fourth and scored on Benge's tiebreaking single but was removed in the sixth after hitting a foul ball.

Peralta's Performance

Peralta (3-3) allowed a leadoff homer to Dillon Dingler in the second and a sacrifice fly to Spencer Torkelson later in the inning, giving Detroit a 2-0 lead. However, the right-hander worked out of trouble multiple times and made a critical defensive play by cutting down Keith at home plate.

The Mets' victory improved their record, while the Tigers were left to rue the missed opportunity from the bizarre collision.
