Phil Mickelson will miss the PGA Championship next week due to a personal family health matter, continuing his absence from major tournaments this season. The six-time major winner, who also skipped The Masters in April and LIV Golf events in February, has been replaced by fellow American Max Homa at Aronimink from May 11-17.
Mickelson's Statement on Withdrawal
In a statement reported by Fox Sports, Mickelson expressed his regret: "I wish I could [play]. I can't unfortunately. I'm hoping to play the rest of the year after that but I honestly don't know." This follows his earlier announcement in February that he would step away from golf due to a family health matter involving his wife, Amy. He wrote on Instagram: "I will not be able to participate in the first two LIV Events as Amy and I need to be present for a family health matter."
LIV Golf CEO Comments
LIV Golf CEO Scott O'Neil addressed the media in Virginia, stating: "I talked to Phil yesterday, sorry he can't make it today. I just want to be really sensitive. We all have things going on in our lives that are personal, and his is. I have a lot of love and respect for him... I hope he comes back soon." O'Neil added that Mickelson's presence is missed and that he carries significant weight in every room he enters.
Mickelson's Recent Golf Activity
Mickelson has played only one LIV Golf event this season, finishing tied 48th out of 57 in South Africa in March. His last major appearance was the 2025 Open Championship. He has won three Masters titles, two PGA Championships, and one Open Championship, with his 2021 PGA Championship win making him the oldest major champion at age 50.
Max Homa Named Replacement
Max Homa, a five-time PGA Tour winner, will take Mickelson's spot in the PGA Championship field. Homa has been in strong form recently, with top-10 finishes in several events this season.
Mickelson's absence raises questions about his future in golf, as he has not committed to a return date. His fans and the golf community await further updates on his family's health situation.
