Morocco Awarded AFCON Title After Senegal Forfeit Controversy

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has made the extraordinary decision to award the Africa Cup of Nations title to Morocco, overturning Senegal's victory in the final two months after the match took place. This unprecedented move comes after CAF ruled that Senegal forfeited the game by walking off the pitch during the closing stages of regulation time.

Chaotic Final Leads to Historic Reversal

The AFCON final descended into chaos in its final moments when Senegal's players left the field at the request of their coach, Pape Thiaw. The walk-off occurred after Morocco was awarded a controversial late penalty, sparking fury among the Senegalese team. The resulting 17-minute delay saw the game temporarily suspended before eventually resuming, with Brahim Diaz missing the contentious spot-kick.

Despite the disruption, Senegal appeared to have secured victory when Pape Gueye scored the winning goal in extra-time, giving his team a 1-0 triumph that seemed to deliver their second AFCON title. However, CAF's subsequent investigation and appeal process has completely reversed that outcome.

Official CAF Statement Confirms Forfeit

In an official statement, CAF declared: "The CAF Appeal Board decided that in application of Article 84 of the Regulations of the CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the Senegal National Team is declared to have forfeited the Final Match of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), with the result of the Match being recorded as 3–0 in favour of the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football (FRMF)."

The governing body further stated that "Senegal through the conduct of its team, infringed Article 82 of the Regulations of the Africa Cup of Nations," confirming that "In application of Article 84 of the Regulations of the Africa Cup of Nations, the Senegal team is declared to have forfeited the match, with the result recorded as 3–0 in favour of Morocco."

Morocco's Appeal Upheld After Host Nation Disappointment

Morocco's football federation lodged a formal appeal following the controversial final, and the CAF appeal board has now upheld that appeal. This decision transforms what was originally a 1-0 extra-time defeat for Morocco into an official 3-0 victory, awarding them their second AFCON championship and their first since 1976.

The reversal is particularly significant given that Morocco served as host nation for the tournament, adding emotional weight to their initial disappointment at losing the final on home soil.

Mane's Attempted Mediation Proves Futile

Senegal star Sadio Mane played a crucial role in convincing his teammates to return to the pitch after their walk-off, though his efforts have ultimately proven in vain. Reflecting on the incident at the time, Mane explained: "When they decided to go out and not play, I stayed and asked some people, 'What do you think about this? Is it a good idea or not?' Then I decided to go and bring everyone back to the pitch. I think it is the best thing to do."

Mane continued: "Because this is just football, I think the referee sometimes can make mistakes. People around the world are watching. It could be a penalty or not, but that is not the most important thing. What matters is respecting the game. It is not fair to stop a match like this."

The decision represents one of the most dramatic reversals in international football history, with Senegal being stripped of a championship they believed they had won fair and square, while Morocco celebrates an unexpected title victory months after the final whistle originally blew.
