The National Basketball Association (NBA) has issued lifetime bans to two individuals following a disruptive incident during Game 1 of the NBA Finals, where one fan ran onto the court and attempted to take a selfie with San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama. The disturbance occurred midway through the fourth quarter of Wednesday night's game between the Spurs and the New York Knicks.
Incident Details
The fan who was arrested entered the court from the sideline opposite the team benches, sprinting from behind the play into San Antonio's offensive end. Security personnel quickly intervened and removed the individual from the court. No physical contact was made with Wembanyama or any Knicks players during the brief disruption.
A second fan also received a lifetime ban for their role in the incident, though the league did not specify their exact involvement. An NBA spokesperson confirmed the action in a statement: 'The individual who entered the court area during Game 1 of The Finals was arrested and will be banned for life from all NBA arenas. A second individual will also receive a lifetime ban for his role in the incident.'
Reactions
Wembanyama appeared unfazed by the event. 'I've never been in that situation,' he said. 'I didn't know how to act.' Play was halted for one minute and 29 seconds before resuming with a jump ball, and the fan was escorted out through a baseline tunnel. Spurs coach Mitch Johnson downplayed the incident, remarking: 'I don't think it was an event at all. I thought security got him out of there. I think everybody moved on to the next play.'
Series Outlook
Game 2 of the best-of-seven series is scheduled for Friday night, with the San Antonio Spurs aiming to level the series after losing the opening game on Wednesday.
