One person has tragically died and dozens more sustained injuries during a chaotic flag-waving event in Peru on Friday, casting a shadow over the upcoming football derby. The incident unfolded at the iconic Alejandro Villanueva Stadium in Lima, just one day before the highly anticipated match between local rivals Alianza Lima and Universitario.
Casualties and Club Response
Media reports from the scene indicate that approximately 60 people were injured in the disturbance, with one fatality confirmed. Club Alianza Lima swiftly issued a statement expressing profound condolences to the victims and their families in the wake of the casualties.
"We are fully and transparently collaborating with the competent authorities," the club declared, emphasising its commitment to "total transparency" in assisting investigators to clarify the precise circumstances of the incident. The exact cause of the tragedy remains unclear at this initial stage.
Stadium Safety Ruled Out
Both Alianza Lima and official fire services have moved to dismiss any suggestions of structural failure at the stadium as a contributing factor. Fire official Marco Pajuelo provided detailed reassurance in an interview with Canal N news channel.
"Based on what has been assessed, no structure has been affected," Pajuelo stated, confirming that an initial inspection revealed no evidence of anyone falling into a pit or any dangerous debris at the venue. "There hasn't been any debris."
Match to Proceed as Scheduled
Despite the sombre prelude, the Peruvian Professional Soccer League has confirmed that Saturday's crucial derby match will proceed as originally planned. The league underscored its ongoing dedication to spectator safety in an official communication.
"We will continue to work closely with the clubs and authorities to promote safe environments both inside and outside the stadiums," the statement affirmed, highlighting collaborative efforts to ensure future events are secure for all attendees.
The tragedy has sparked renewed discussions about crowd management and safety protocols at major sporting events in Peru, as the community mourns the loss and supports those injured during the flag-waving gathering.
