The PGA Championship is underway, and several top players are at risk of missing the cut after a challenging first round. Rory McIlroy, Bryson DeChambeau, and Viktor Hovland all struggled, while Jon Rahm issued an apology for an incident involving a volunteer.
McIlroy's Difficult Start
Rory McIlroy, who had a strong showing at the Masters, found himself in trouble on Thursday. The Northern Irishman was around level par for most of the day but finished poorly with four consecutive bogeys, leaving him at four-over-par. This puts him in danger of missing the cut as the second round progresses.
DeChambeau and Hovland Also Struggle
Bryson DeChambeau endured a nightmare opening round, including a double-bogey and several errant drives, placing him in a precarious position. Viktor Hovland also faced difficulties on the back nine, leaving him with a significant deficit to overcome.
Rahm's Apology
Jon Rahm was forced to apologise after expressing his frustrations during the first round. After a poor approach on the seventh hole, Rahm took a second swing at the turf, sending a divot flying that hit a nearby volunteer. Rahm quickly approached the volunteer to apologise. Despite the incident, Rahm carded a one-under-par 69, leaving him just two shots behind the early clubhouse lead.
As the second day unfolds, several players are tied at the top at three-under-par. Updates will continue throughout the day.
