Arsenal's hopes of winning the Champions League for the first time ended in a penalty shoot-out defeat to Paris St Germain in Budapest. The match finished 1-1 after extra time, with Kai Havertz's early goal cancelled out by Ousmane Dembele's second-half penalty. PSG won the shoot-out 4-3, retaining their title.
Eberechi Eze dragged his spot-kick wide, and Gabriel blazed over after David Raya saved from Nuno Mendes. Lucas Beraldo sent Raya the wrong way to secure victory for PSG. Gabriel, one of Arsenal's best players on the night, was consoled by teammates after his miss.
Arsenal took the lead after just 302 seconds when Havertz capitalised on a fortunate deflection off Leandro Trossard. Havertz, who scored the winner for Chelsea in the 2021 final, controlled with three touches before smashing into the roof of the net. It was Arsenal's only shot on target.
PSG dominated possession but struggled to create clear chances until Khvicha Kvaratskhelia won a penalty after being fouled by Cristhian Mosquera. Dembele converted from the spot. Kvaratskhelia later hit the post after a defensive error by William Saliba.
PSG won the coin toss, meaning the shoot-out took place in front of their fans at the Puskas Arena. Arsenal had previously lost their only other Champions League final appearance, in 2006.
