Former Rangers forward Greg Stewart has urged the club to target Derek McInnes or Steven Gerrard as potential replacements for Danny Rohl, who is reportedly close to leaving Ibrox for RB Salzburg. Stewart, who played under both managers, believes either would provide the stability Rangers need after a turbulent first year under Andrew Cavenagh.
Speaking to Record Sport, Stewart said: 'The two names that scream out to me are Derek and Steven. If we could got one of those guys, then 100 percent you let Danny go.' He added that new chief executive Jim Gillespie's admiration for McInnes could be decisive, noting: 'I know the new chief exec Jim Gillespie likes Derek McInnes. I’m not going to say where I heard that but I know Jim likes Derek.'
Stewart also highlighted Gerrard's previous success at Rangers, winning an unbeaten league title, and suggested the absence of former executives Patrick Stewart and Kevin Thelwell might make a return more feasible. 'Steven showed what he can do with the right players when he was last in charge,' he said.
The uncertainty surrounding Rohl's future has paused transfer plans and pre-season preparations, with players due back for training next week. However, Stewart remains calm, stressing that there is still time before the season starts. 'We’ve still got six weeks before the season starts. I get that most of the players will be back for pre-season in a few days but I do believe there is a strong core there,' he said.
Stewart expressed surprise at Rohl's potential move to Austria, calling Rangers a 'far more attractive proposition' than Salzburg. He speculated that the disappointing end to last season, where Rangers blew the title, may have influenced Rohl's thinking. 'A majority of the fans I feel have turned against him. But I think Danny did well for us given the position we were in,' Stewart concluded.
