Georgia Stanway's last-gasp own goal against Paris Saint-Germain saw Bayern Munich dumped out of the Women's Champions League on Tuesday night, marking the first time in the competition's history that no German side will reach the quarter-finals.
The Lionesses star's unfortunate intervention condemned the German giants to a 2-2 draw with PSG in their final group stage match. Bayern knew only victory would secure their passage to the knockout stages, and Giulia Gwinn's first-half strike gave them the lead. However, Tabitha Chawinga equalised for PSG late in the second half, before Sydney Lohmann restored Bayern's lead two minutes later, sending the home fans into raptures.
But Stanway's heartbreaking own goal two minutes from time levelled the scores. Jovana Damnjanovic thought she had rescued Bayern in the final minute, celebrating with an emphatic knee slide, only for the goal to be disallowed for offside. The draw meant Bayern finished third in their group behind PSG and Ajax, exiting the tournament.
Stanway joined Bayern in 2022 and helped them win the Women's Bundesliga title last season. With Wolfsburg knocked out in qualifying and Eintracht Frankfurt failing to progress, Bayern's exit leaves no German sides in the last eight for the first time in UWCL history.
Chelsea are the only English team still competing, having won their group with a game to spare. They join PSG, Ajax, Hacken, Lyon, SK Brann, SL Benfica and Barcelona in the quarter-finals. The draw takes place on 6 February.
