Stephen A. Smith Opens Up About Molly Qerim's ESPN Departure

ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith has publicly revealed the reasons behind the exit of his former co-host Molly Qerim from the network. Qerim, who served as host of the popular sports debate show First Take for a decade, announced her departure in September and officially stepped away at the end of 2025.

Smith's Candid Comments on Podcast

In a recent episode of The White House With Michael Irvin podcast, Smith, 58, described Qerim's departure as 'incredibly unfortunate'. He explained that the 41-year-old presenter made the decision to leave based on personal issues.

'Molly decided that she wanted to leave, and she had some issues that I'm not going to discuss,' Smith stated. 'It wasn't with me, but she had some issues that was foremost on her mind and she made the decision to abruptly resign.'

Personal Reflections and Professional Respect

Smith expressed both personal affection for his former colleague and professional admiration for her replacement. 'I can tell you that Molly and I worked together for 10 years — I loved Molly. I didn't want her to leave,' he confessed.

While acknowledging that Shae Cornette has been doing 'an outstanding job' as the new host, Smith admitted on a personal level: 'I definitely miss Molly, as do a lot of us, because we're friends, and she was great.'

Qerim's Emotional Farewell Statement

In her departure announcement, Qerim wrote: 'After much reflection, I've decided it's time to close this incredible chapter and step away from First Take. Hosting this show has been one of the greatest honors of my career.'

She expressed gratitude for her colleagues and the show's passionate fanbase, adding: 'I'm so grateful for what this journey has given me: lifelong friendships, unforgettable memories, and the chance to be part of something truly special.'

ESPN's Official Response

The network responded to Qerim's departure with a statement from ESPN President of Content Burke Magnus, who praised her contributions: 'Molly has been an integral part of ESPN since 2006 and a key driver of First Take's success since joining as a host a decade ago.'

Magnus highlighted her 'poise, skill, and professionalism' while noting that ESPN respects her decision and wishes her the best for the future.

Career Background and Replacement

Before joining First Take, Qerim contributed to ESPN's digital and mobile platforms from 2006 to 2010, hosting programs including College Football Live and Fantasy Football Now. After leaving the network in 2010, she returned five years later to take on the First Take hosting role that she held until her recent departure.

Her replacement, Shae Cornette, has taken over hosting duties on the show, with Smith noting her comprehensive sports knowledge and describing her as 'the real deal.'
