Ted Lasso star Cristo Fernández has transformed his fictional role as a footballer into reality by signing a professional contract with El Paso Locomotive FC, a second-tier side in the United Soccer League.
From TV Stardom to Real Pitch
The 35-year-old actor, best known for playing the beloved Dani Rojas on the hit Apple TV+ series, will now don the Locomotive jersey as a forward. The club announced the signing on Wednesday, stating: "The rumors were true. Welcome to El Paso, Cristo Fernández."
Fernández, who played youth football in Mexico before a knee injury ended his early aspirations, has been training with Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire's reserves this year. He also appeared in pre-season matches for El Paso before officially joining the squad.
"Football has always been a huge part of my life and identity, and no matter where life has taken me, the dream of competing professionally never truly left my heart," Fernández said in a statement. "I'm incredibly grateful to El Paso Locomotive FC – the club, coaches, staff, and especially my team-mates – for opening the doors and giving me the opportunity to compete from day one."
He added: "This journey back to professional soccer is about believing in yourself, taking risks, and continuing to chase your dreams no matter how unexpected the path may be. Maybe I'm just a crazy man with crazy dreams... so being here with the 'Locos' actually makes perfect sense."
New Chapter for El Paso Locomotive
El Paso Locomotive FC, founded in 2018, currently sits fourth in Group B of the USL Championship standings. Head coach Junior Gonzalez welcomed Fernández, saying: "Cristo is a great addition to our roster, adding another attacking threat to our forward line. His passion for the game and leadership qualities for our locker room allow us to continue growing the positive culture we strive for as a club."
Beyond Ted Lasso, Fernández has appeared in films like Spider-Man: No Way Home and Sonic the Hedgehog 3, as well as a State Farm commercial alongside Patrick Mahomes. Now, he adds professional footballer to his resume, proving that dreams can indeed cross from fiction to reality.
