Ted Lasso Star Cristo Fernandez Signs Pro Soccer Contract

Cristo Fernandez, the actor celebrated for his role as Dani Rojas in the Apple TV series Ted Lasso, has officially signed a professional soccer contract with El Paso Locomotive FC of the United Soccer League (USL). The announcement was made on Tuesday, though the terms of the deal remain undisclosed and are subject to approval by the second-tier league and the relevant football federation.

A Dream Realized

Fernandez, 35, earned the contract after a two-month trial with the club, during which he played in a pre-season match against New Mexico United. His soccer journey began at youth level, but a serious injury at age 15 forced him to pivot to acting. Despite this, he never abandoned his dream of competing professionally. "No matter where life has taken me, the dream of competing professionally never truly left my heart," Fernandez said. "I'm incredibly grateful to El Paso Locomotive FC — the club, coaches, staff, and especially my teammates — for opening the doors and giving me the opportunity to compete from day one."

Club and Coach Praise

Locomotive head coach Junior Gonzalez welcomed Fernandez as a valuable addition to the squad, highlighting his attacking threat, passion, and leadership qualities. "He brings an extra dimension to our attack and a positive influence in the dressing room," Gonzalez stated.

From Ted Lasso to the Pitch

Fernandez has appeared in all three seasons of Ted Lasso since the show premiered in 2020. A fourth season is expected later this year, with Jason Sudeikis reprising his role as Ted Lasso, who returns to London to coach a women's team at AFC Richmond. Beyond acting, Fernandez featured in a 2024 State Farm commercial titled "Bundle is Life" alongside Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, a three-time Super Bowl winner. He also had a minor role in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, starring Jim Carrey and Keanu Reeves.

Now in his mid-thirties, Fernandez is poised to chase his soccer aspirations, having secured his first professional contract. His story mirrors that of his character Dani Rojas, whose infectious optimism and love for the game resonated with audiences worldwide.
