Tributes have been paid to a small-time trainer who died after being kicked in the back while he was preparing to run his only horse.
Stephen Meyer, who was 71, had been licensed for 20 years, enjoying his best moments with the six-time winner Danza In The Dark. Danza In The Dark was among the outsiders for the final race on the card of the first day of the Scone Carnival in New South Wales, Australia on Friday.
But in the lead up to the race Meyer was kicked in the back by a horse and, despite being attended to by racecourse medics, died of his injuries.
Race Continued After Incident
The nine-year-old Danza In The Dark, who was co-owned by the trainer and his wife Jenny, took part in the delayed race but finished last of 13.
Racing New South Wales said in a statement: "The Tamworth and New South Wales racing community is mourning the sudden passing of respected local hobby trainer Stephen Meyer on Friday, 15 May 2026.
"A dedicated and highly regarded horseman from the Hunter North West district, Stephen was known for his integrity, work ethic, and deep lifelong love for thoroughbreds.
"Operating out of Tamworth, he achieved notable success with his stable star, Danza In The Dark, winner of the 2024 Walcha and Quirindi Cups.
"His humble approach and sportsmanship earned him wide respect across the industry. Every story he told always included mention of a horse. Racing NSW extends its deepest condolences to Stephen's family and many friends."
