England Manager Tuchel Voices Concern Over Madueke's Knee Injury
England manager Thomas Tuchel has admitted he is "worried" about the condition of winger Noni Madueke after the Arsenal player was forced off during the first half of England's 1-1 friendly draw with Uruguay. The incident occurred following a challenge from Rodrigo Aguirre in the 37th minute, which Tuchel described as "on the edge" of acceptability.
Madueke's Early Exit and Immediate Impact
Madueke, aged 24, was seen leaving Wembley Stadium with his left knee in a brace after receiving treatment on the pitch and being substituted. There are currently no specific details regarding the extent of the injury, but Tuchel emphasised the player's potential influence in the match.
"I'm worried, of course, because I think he was a difference-maker today," Tuchel stated. "He started well, he was full of energy, he was ready to go. Against a team like Uruguay, who rely on one-against-ones, he could have been a key player for us. Very sad and upset, and hopefully it's not a big injury."
Stones' Fitness Struggles and Tuchel's Support
In a separate development, Tuchel revealed that defender John Stones was close to starting the match but felt an issue with his calf. The manager still views Stones as a "world-class" player who can be crucial for England, despite fitness problems limiting his season to just 15 appearances for Manchester City, with only seven in the Premier League.
"He's obviously very upset, and at the moment he gets my full support because it helps him more than putting more pressure," Tuchel explained. "He was ready to play for City in recent weeks, featuring in the Champions League and FA Cup, but not in the league. He played enough for me to be important for us. So strong in training again, like every time I see him."
Tuchel added that the team opted for caution, avoiding any risk with Stones' reintegration after he felt discomfort in training. "We did a reintegration, he felt it again in the last training. So no risk at the moment. But he has a lot of credit in the bank with me. Let's hope that he gets fit because it's most important that he finds his confidence."
Tuchel's Take on Mid-Half Water Breaks
Meanwhile, Tuchel shared his positive view on the mid-half water breaks, which have sparked controversy ahead of the upcoming World Cup due to their use for advertisements in some countries. The England manager noted that his team requested a break during the Uruguay match, but it was denied by the opposition.
"I think I like them. I can speak to my players, get a little bit of quality time with them, and encourage them or change something," he said. "Does it change the game? Yes, 100 per cent. It's almost in quarters. We asked for a water break today but Uruguay denied it. They didn't want us to have it. It gives us just a chance for interaction, for giving a bit of advice, for encouragement but also to the opponents. I think it's necessary and, me as a coach, I will make use of it."
