Van Dijk Reveals Klopp's Charm Offensive Snubbed Chelsea and Man City

Virgil van Dijk has disclosed how Jurgen Klopp's persuasive powers convinced him to reject moves to Manchester City and Chelsea in favour of Liverpool. The Dutch defender, who became the world's most expensive defender when he joined Liverpool from Southampton for £75 million in January 2018, admitted that both Pep Guardiola and Antonio Conte had offered him the chance to play for their clubs.

Van Dijk, now a Champions League and Premier League winner with Liverpool, cited Klopp's unique man-management as the decisive factor. 'Klopp has something special. Is it his energy? Is it his overall image? I think it is his man-management. These days that is more important than anything in football,' he said.

The 28-year-old explained that Klopp's genuine happiness when players arrive at the club inspires them. 'It may sound daft, but that really inspires you as a player,' Van Dijk added. However, he also revealed that Klopp is not afraid to be tough when necessary, saying: 'He gives every player a hug after the game... And the next day, he can hammer you in front of the squad in training. But then you accept that too. Because you know it is not personal.'
