Jonas Vingegaard surged into the leader's pink jersey after a commanding victory on stage 14 of the Giro d'Italia, a demanding mountain stage that concluded in Pila. The Danish rider's triumph marked his third stage win in his debut Giro appearance, solidifying his status as a formidable contender.
Stage 14 Dominance
Vingegaard crossed the finish line with a substantial 49-second advantage over Felix Gall, who secured second place. Meanwhile, Afonso Eulalio, who had held the pink jersey for nine consecutive days, struggled during the final ascent and finished 2 minutes 49 seconds behind in 15th position, relinquishing his overall lead.
From the outset, Vingegaard made his intentions clear, stating that his sole focus was on winning the 133-kilometer stage starting in Aosta. His Visma-Lease a Bike team executed a flawless strategy, controlling the pace from the beginning and keeping a tight rein on a 23-rider breakaway group.
Decisive Attack
The pivotal moment occurred on the final 16-kilometer climb. With 8.5 kilometers remaining, Eulalio began to lose contact with the group of favorites as Vingegaard's teammate Sepp Kuss set a relentless tempo. The last escapee was caught with five kilometers to go, and moments later, Vingegaard launched a powerful attack that no one could match. Gall managed to maintain his composure, finishing just ahead of a chasing group that included Jai Hindley, Giulio Pellizzari, and Vingegaard's teammate Davide Piganzoli.
With this victory, Vingegaard now leads the overall classification by 2 minutes 26 seconds over Eulalio. Gall sits third, a further 24 seconds behind, as the race prepares for a flat stage into Milan on Sunday.
