The 35-year-old former Manchester United striker has netted 14 goals this season for Brighton, a career-high in the Premier League, as the club pushes for European qualification.
Welbeck's Remarkable Season
Welbeck, who previously played for Manchester United and Arsenal, has been written off by those clubs but has flourished at Brighton. His 14 league goals this term represent his best-ever return, and he has posted back-to-back double-figure seasons for the first time in his career. Hurzeler highlighted Welbeck's professionalism and work ethic, saying, "I think it's a sign of his professionalism, of how hard he works, of his daily work ethic, and I'm really happy for Danny for his season."
England's Striker Options
England manager Thomas Tuchel will announce his World Cup squad on Friday. Harry Kane remains the first-choice striker, but there is intense competition for backup roles. Ollie Watkins, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Dominic Solanke, and Ivan Toney are all in contention. Welbeck's international experience includes playing at Euro 2012 and scoring 16 goals for England, though his last cap came in 2018 against Costa Rica.
Hurzeler added, "For me what stands out is the development from him, the process he went through because, I think in the last two seasons, he scored the most goals ever. He played the most minutes ever in the Premier League, and therefore it shows that, even when you get older, you still have a chance that you can improve, that you can achieve things."
