Olympic Champion Alex Yee Takes Key Pacing Role in Historic London Marathon Bid
In a significant development for British athletics, Olympic triathlon gold medalist Alex Yee has been confirmed as the primary pacemaker for Emile Cairess as he attempts to break Mo Farah's longstanding British marathon record at the TCS London Marathon. This strategic partnership represents a major boost for Cairess's ambitious record attempt on home soil.
Repaying a Crucial Favor from Valencia Success
The arrangement follows Cairess's instrumental role in pacing Yee to his spectacular 2:06:38 marathon performance in Valencia last summer, which stands as the second-fastest marathon time ever recorded by a British athlete. Yee's decision to return the favor underscores the collaborative spirit within British distance running.
"Emile is a tremendous runner who provided invaluable assistance during my training block and race day pacing in Valencia," Yee explained. "My objective is to reciprocate that support by helping him as much as possible during this year's London Marathon and contributing to the realization of his competitive ambitions."
The Formidable Challenge: Mo Farah's Record
The British men's marathon record currently belongs to Mo Farah, who set the benchmark with his blistering 2:05:11 performance at the 2018 London Marathon. Cairess enters this attempt as Britain's third-fastest marathoner in history with a personal best of 2:06:46, positioning him as the nation's foremost contender for record-breaking success in the capital.
Cairess demonstrated his world-class credentials with a fourth-place finish at the 2024 Paris Olympics, while Yee achieved his crowning Olympic glory at those same Games before making his marathon debut in London last year, where he finished 14th with a respectable time of 2:11:08.
Experienced Pacemaking Team Assembled
Yee will not be working alone in his pacing duties. He will be joined by an experienced team of pacemakers including Oscar Kiplimo, older brother of half marathon world record-holder Jacob Kiplimo, and Andrea Kiptoo, a training partner of reigning London Marathon champion Sabastian Sawe. This collective expertise provides Cairess with optimal conditions for his record attempt.
Yee's London Marathon Experience
Reflecting on his previous London Marathon experience, Yee shared: "Competing in the TCS London Marathon last year was an extraordinary experience. As a London native, I believed I understood what to anticipate, but the crowds, support, and atmosphere surpassed all expectations. Although I won't be completing the full 26.2 miles this year, I eagerly anticipate immersing myself in that remarkable environment once again."
The 2026 London Marathon is scheduled for April 26th, setting the stage for what promises to be a historic chapter in British marathon running as Cairess attempts to rewrite the record books with Olympic champion Yee guiding his pace.
