In a move that has stunned the golfing world, LIV Golf player Mito Pereira has announced his immediate retirement from professional competition at the age of 30. The Chilean star released a statement on Monday explaining his decision to step away from the sport in pursuit of a more settled life in his home country.
A New Chapter: Prioritising Home and Family
Pereira, who amassed significant earnings during his career, stated that his priorities have naturally evolved. He expressed a primary desire to escape the relentless travel schedule of tour life, return to Chile, and focus on his personal life. "After many years connected to this beautiful sport, priorities naturally evolve," Pereira said. "Today, my main desire is to step away from constant travel, return to Chile, and focus on my personal life."
He reflected fondly on his time in the game, acknowledging its profound impact. "Golf played a fundamental role in my life. It allowed me to grow both personally and professionally, to meet incredible people, experience different cultures, and set goals—most of which I was fortunate enough to achieve," he added.
A Career of Highs and Heartbreak
The Chilean's career was marked by both notable success and one infamous near-miss. Pereira is perhaps best remembered for holding a three-shot lead during the final round of the 2022 PGA Championship in Tulsa, Oklahoma, only to suffer a dramatic collapse that cost him the Major title. Despite that setback, he secured a lucrative move to the Saudi-backed LIV Golf circuit at the end of that season.
His first campaign on the LIV tour was successful, finishing eighth and earning an estimated $11 million. However, his form dipped in the most recent season, leading to his relegation ahead of the 2026 season—a factor that no longer concerns him.
Finding Peace and Preparedness for the Future
In his farewell, Pereira emphasised his contentment and readiness for life after golf. "I now begin a new chapter feeling happy, motivated, and at peace, without urgency about what the future may bring," he stated. He highlighted the personal cost of his professional journey, noting, "I spent many years living away from home, in another country, countless weeks in hotels and airports. Now, the time has come to pause."
He credits the sport with equipping him for the next stage. "Chile is my place in the world, and my family is my reason for being. Golf taught me resilience, how to navigate both good and difficult moments, and how to make discipline and goals a way of life. I believe I am well prepared for what lies ahead," Pereira concluded, thanking his supporters worldwide.
