In a dramatic twist for professional golf, five-time major champion Brooks Koepka has formally applied to regain his membership on the PGA Tour. This move comes just weeks after the American star walked away from the rival, Saudi-backed LIV Golf circuit.
The Exit and The Application
Koepka, a fundamental figure in LIV Golf's launch back in 2022, departed the league on 23 December 2025, despite having a year remaining on his lucrative contract. He was reported to have joined LIV for a staggering $100 million (£74.6m). His management cited family reasons for the decision, stating he wished to spend more time at home while remaining a supporter of the breakaway tour.
According to reports, the 35-year-old informed the PGA Tour of his intention to leave LIV before making his exit public. Koepka had been suspended by the PGA Tour after not renewing his membership prior to the 2022/23 season. His application now signals a clear desire to return to the tour where he built his legendary status.
Controversy and Calls for Consequence
The PGA Tour responded to the news with a cryptic statement, wishing Koepka and his family success while reiterating that it offers "the most competitive, challenging and lucrative environment." However, the potential for a swift return has not been universally welcomed.
Golf Channel analyst and former player Brandel Chamblee has been vocal, arguing that Koepka should face a penalty before being readmitted. "Allowing Brooks Koepka to return to the PGA Tour with no consequence would undermine the very meritocratic foundations that make the PGA Tour legitimate," Chamblee stated. He warned that allowing a star player to leave and return without sanction sets a "corrosive" precedent.
Family Diverging Paths
Interestingly, while Brooks Koepka seeks a return to the traditional tour, his brother Chase Koepka is heading in the opposite direction. An original LIV player at the inaugural London event, Chase was relegated after the 2023 season and later suffered serious nerve damage. He is now attempting to earn one of three cards back onto the LIV Golf circuit for the 2026 season.
