Bob MacIntyre squandered a four-shot lead in the final round as world number one Scottie Scheffler produced a stunning chip to win the BMW Championship in Maryland. MacIntyre's overnight advantage was reduced to a single stroke after he began Sunday with two bogeys, and despite a valiant effort, he could not halt the American's momentum.
With two holes to play, MacIntyre was within one shot, but Scheffler holed a remarkable chip from the rough on the 17th to effectively seal victory. It was a bitter blow for MacIntyre, who had sunk a 41-foot putt on the final hole on Saturday to retain his lead. Seeking a win to secure his place in Europe's Ryder Cup team, MacIntyre made a nightmare start, but Scheffler also struggled early, missing a putt that restored the Scot's two-shot lead after three holes.
The American drew level on the fifth after MacIntyre found a bunker, and Scheffler moved two clear on the 13th. A Scheffler bogey on the 14th reduced his lead, but the 15th proved pivotal as MacIntyre missed a birdie putt while Scheffler made his. MacIntyre cut the lead to one with a birdie at the 16th, but after Scheffler's heroics on the 17th, MacIntyre could not respond, finishing with a three-over-par 73, two shots behind Scheffler's 15-under 265.
The win was Scheffler's 18th on the PGA Tour and fifth this year, the second consecutive season he has achieved that total, a feat previously managed only by Tiger Woods. Tommy Fleetwood shot a final-round 67 to tie for fourth behind American Maverick McNealy, while England's Harry Hall, who started Sunday tied for fourth, slipped to sixth after a 70. Rory McIlroy was hampered by back-to-back double bogeys on the fifth and sixth, matching Hall's 70 to finish tied for 12th.
