Rory McIlroy's Extravagant Masters Champions Dinner Menu Revealed
McIlroy's Masters Champions Dinner Menu Costs Revealed

Following his triumphant victory at The Masters last year, Rory McIlroy has been granted the prestigious honour of designing the menu for the renowned 'Champions Dinner' ahead of this year's tournament. The Irish golfing superstar has certainly not held back on extravagance, despite the fact that he is personally footing the entire bill for the occasion.

The Tradition and Cost of the Champions Dinner

It is a little-known aspect of the Champions Dinner at Augusta National that the extensive and often costly menus presented to former winners of the golf major are financed completely by the 'host' of the event—the previous year's champion. This encompasses all food served as well as the beverages, a crucial consideration for McIlroy given his refined palate and appreciation for fine wines.

'I believe it would be rather presumptuous to have a menu planned in your mind before you actually secure the tournament victory,' McIlroy remarked during a conference call on Wednesday. 'However, I have always contemplated what I would desire the dinner to resemble if I were to win the Masters one day. What would I wish to serve?'

He added with enthusiasm: 'I am incredibly excited to host the dinner on Tuesday evening. And then, naturally, to participate in that dinner for many, many years into the future.'

A Culinary Journey Through McIlroy's Tastes and Heritage

The twelve items featured on the menu demonstrate a diverse array of flavours and culinary influences, with numerous nods to McIlroy's Irish roots and personal history throughout.

Starters include a peach and ricotta flatbread, paying homage to Georgia's state fruit, alongside grilled elk sliders, rock shrimp tempura, and his mother's recipe for bacon-wrapped dates.

The first course is a Yellowfin Tuna Carpaccio, famously served at chef Eric Ripert's acclaimed three-Michelin-star restaurant, Le Bernardin, in New York City. Chefs from Augusta National travelled to the Big Apple to ensure they could replicate the dish with authentic precision.

For the main course, guests can select either a Wagyu Filet Mignon or Seared Salmon. These are accompanied by sauteed brussels sprouts, brown butter glazed carrots, crispy Vidalia onion rings, and traditional Irish champ—creamy mashed potatoes infused with scallions.

McIlroy concludes the meal with a classic dessert from the British Isles: Sticky Toffee Pudding served with vanilla ice cream.

An Opulent Wine Selection from Augusta's Cellar

Naturally, there is an extensive wine list, as McIlroy fully utilised Augusta National's legendary wine cellar. In addition to a 2015 Salon 'S' Brut Champagne and a 2022 Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru, there are two wines of particular significance to the golfer.

One is a 1990 Chateau Lafite Rothschild Bordeaux, which McIlroy celebrated his Masters victory with. The bottles were acquired as a gift for McIlroy by his friend and fellow golfer, Shane Lowry.

The other is a dessert wine—a 1989 Chateau d'Yquem—chosen by McIlroy because it corresponds to 'my birth year' and was described by him as 'liquid gold.' Each of these wines carries a price tag exceeding $1,000 per bottle. Yet, for McIlroy, the expense is justified by the monumental achievement it commemorates.

The Significance of McIlroy's Masters Victory

The victory at Augusta National last year enabled McIlroy to finally conquer The Masters and complete his career Grand Slam, a remarkable milestone in professional golf. He will now aim to defend the green jacket against a highly competitive field in just a few weeks' time, adding another chapter to his storied career.
