Ruben Amorim is reportedly closing in on becoming the new AC Milan manager, a move that could see him reunited with former Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick. The Portuguese coach has held direct talks with the Serie A club about taking over at the San Siro.
Amorim Leading Candidate for AC Milan Job
Following Massimiliano Allegri's departure, Amorim is considered the top contender for the role, ahead of Oliver Glasner, Mauricio Pochettino, and Sebastian Hoeness. Reports suggest that Rangnick, who had a brief stint as Manchester United interim manager, is being considered for the head of football role at AC Milan, potentially linking up with Amorim again.
Potential Reunion with Manchester United
Should Amorim become AC Milan manager, he could face Manchester United in a pre-season friendly. United have confirmed they will play the Italian club on Saturday, August 15, in Wroclaw, Poland, as their final pre-season match. This would be the first meeting between Amorim and his former club since he was sacked in January.
Amorim's dismissal came after a remarkable rant about his relationships with club bosses. He stated, "I just want to say that I'm going to be the manager of this team, not just the coach. I was really clear on that. That is going to finish in 18 months, and then everyone is going to move on." He added, "If people cannot handle the Gary Nevilles and the criticises of everything, we need to change the club."
Amorim's Tenure at Manchester United
The 41-year-old took charge at Old Trafford in November 2024 and was at the helm for just over a year. In 64 matches, he recorded 25 wins, 23 losses, and 15 draws. He was replaced by Michael Carrick on an interim basis, who turned the season around and secured Champions League qualification. Carrick's role has since been made permanent.
Before facing AC Milan, United will play pre-season friendlies against Wrexham, Rosenborg, Atletico Madrid, and PSG.
