Eagles' Jalen Carter Out vs Chargers After Shoulder Surgery, Playoff Hopes in Mind
Eagles' Jalen Carter ruled out after shoulder surgery

The Philadelphia Eagles will be without a key defensive piece for their Monday Night Football clash against the Los Angeles Chargers, as defensive tackle Jalen Carter has been ruled out following surgery on both shoulders.

Recovery Timeline and Playoff Ambitions

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Carter is currently undergoing treatment after the procedure and his return will be evaluated on a week-to-week basis. The 24-year-old star is determined to be as close to full fitness as possible ahead of the Eagles' anticipated playoff run, which could begin as early as January 10 if they do not secure the top spot in the NFC East.

Carter took personal responsibility for his performance in last Friday's 24-15 defeat to the Chicago Bears, a game in which the Eagles' defence yielded 281 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground. "There were some runs I got drove back or I wasn't making no effect on the play," Carter admitted. He added, "It's my problems to deal with. I ain't gonna tell everybody what I'm going through," hinting at the ongoing discomfort.

Defensive Adjustments in Carter's Absence

With Carter sidelined, the Eagles' defensive line will lean more heavily on Moro Ojomo and Jordan Davis to lead the charge against the Chargers. Third-year player Byron Young and rookie Ty Robinson are also expected to see their roles and responsibilities increase significantly.

Shoulder issues have plagued Carter throughout the season, causing him to miss the first three practices of training camp. He experienced a "little bit of a stinger" during the Week 2 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs, playing in clear discomfort. Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio acknowledged the problem this week, stating, "He does have a shoulder issue. He has been playing with it. Late in the game, he had a great play with it, but it's definitely something there."

A Rising Star's Impact

Selected by the Eagles with the ninth overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Carter has quickly become a cornerstone of their defence. In just two-and-a-half seasons, the former Georgia college star has amassed 107 tackles, 12.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, and 12 passes defended. His impressive debut year earned him a spot on the NFL's All-Rookie team, followed by a Pro Bowl selection last season as the Eagles clinched the Super Bowl championship.

The team and its fans will now hope for a swift and complete recovery for Carter, whose presence on the field is considered vital for any deep postseason campaign.
