Man Utd injury update: Fernandes scare, double setback

Manchester United have received a mixed bag of injury news following their dramatic comeback victory against Crystal Palace, with a fresh concern for captain Bruno Fernandes emerging alongside updates on several key players.

Fernandes Scare and Immediate Return

During the closing moments of United's 2-1 win at Selhurst Park, Bruno Fernandes was seen limping and clutching the back of his leg, sparking immediate worries about his fitness ahead of their crucial match against West Ham. However, manager Ruben Amorim quickly moved to allay fears, confirming the issue was minor.

Amorim stated: "It was a kick, I was shouting at him because he needs to learn we make a substitution in the end, he needs to talk to the bench. But he said it was just a kick, so everything is okay." This positive assessment means Fernandes is expected to be available for Thursday's Premier League fixture against West Ham United at Old Trafford.

Double Striker Setback for Amorim

While Fernandes appears to have avoided serious trouble, United's attacking options remain compromised. Both Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko were absent for the Palace clash due to injuries, though their situations differ significantly.

Cunha, who missed the matches against Everton and Crystal Palace due to a training ground injury, is anticipated to make his return imminently. Amorim confirmed: "I expect to have Matheus in the next one [West Ham United], not this one [vs Crystal Palace]." This points to a return for Cunha on Thursday, December 4.

The news is less encouraging for Benjamin Sesko, who has been sidelined since sustaining a knee injury against Tottenham before the international break. Amorim indicated a longer recovery timeline, saying: "Sesko is going to take a little bit more time. It will take a little bit longer, and we are taking care of him." The current expectation is for a return against Wolves on Monday, December 8.

Defensive Returns and Absences

There was positive news in defence as Lisandro Martinez made his long-awaited return to action after a nine-month absence due to a serious ACL knee injury. The Argentine defender came on as an 82nd-minute substitute for Luke Shaw, marking a significant boost for United's backline.

However, Harry Maguire remains unavailable after being taken off during the 2-2 draw at Tottenham. Amorim grouped his recovery with that of Sesko, noting: "It will take a little bit longer, and we are taking care of him. Harry, the same." Maguire is not expected back until the home fixture against Bournemouth on Monday, December 15.

The timely return of Fernandes would be crucial for United as they face a quick turnaround against West Ham, especially given the team's reliance on his creativity and leadership throughout the season.
