Arkansas Coach and Players Injured in Fatal Highway 71 Crash
School Coach Hurt in Fatal Arkansas Car Crash

A tragic road accident in Arkansas has left a local high school basketball coach seriously injured and claimed the life of another driver. The crash, which also involved two teenage players, occurred on Tuesday near the 2200 block of US Highway 71.

Details of the Tragic Collision

According to the Arkansas State Police, the incident was a head-on collision. Dylan Wagoner, 23, crossed into oncoming traffic and struck a vehicle driven by Greenland School District coach Jeremy Schopper. The impact forced Schopper's car off the road and into a ditch.

Coach Schopper had his 16-year-old daughter and another 16-year-old player in the car with him at the time. Meanwhile, Wagoner's vehicle rolled over on the highway, and he was ejected. Sebastian County Coroner Kenneth Hobbs confirmed that Wagoner died from blunt force trauma.

Injuries and Community Response

The two students received treatment for minor injuries and have since been released from hospital. Coach Jeremy Schopper's condition required him to be airlifted to Washington Regional Medical Center. He was later transferred to a hospital in Little Rock for further care.

In a distressing twist, Greenland Mayor Jim Renfrow revealed that the bus carrying the rest of the basketball team was directly behind Schopper's vehicle and witnessed the entire crash. The team was returning from a game in Mansfield.

The Greenland School District issued a statement expressing gratitude to the emergency services and community. It read: 'Special thank you from Pirate Nation to Sebastian County, Arkansas State Police, first responders, staff and community... Please continue to keep all impacted by this in your thoughts and prayers.'

Ongoing Support and Cancellations

The district has taken several steps in response to the tragedy:

  • A bank account has been established for donations to assist the Schopper family with medical expenses.
  • The school has offered counselling services to all students and staff affected by the event.
  • Friday's scheduled basketball game against Pea Ridge has been cancelled.

The community continues to rally around those affected by the sudden and devastating incident on US Highway 71.
