Audi Completes First Laps in 2026 F1 Car

In a landmark moment for the sport, Audi has officially hit the track with its 2026 Formula 1 car, becoming the first team to run its new-generation challenger ahead of the revolutionary season.

Historic Filming Day in Catalonia

The German manufacturer, which has taken over the former Sauber operation, conducted a filming day at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on Friday 9 January 2026. Drivers Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto were entrusted with the wheel for this first shakedown, utilising one of the two 100km promotional running days permitted by the FIA regulations.

Social media was quickly alight with videos of the camouflaged Audi machine in action. The team's official colour scheme will be revealed to the world at a dedicated livery launch in Berlin on Tuesday 20 January.

A New Era for Audi and Formula 1

Audi's entry marks a significant shift in the F1 landscape. The company is not merely a sponsor but a full works team, developing its own power unit at its base in Neuburg an der Donau, Germany. The chassis operation will continue from Sauber's historic home in Hinwil, Switzerland.

This season represents Audi's maiden voyage in Formula 1, though it brings a formidable pedigree from other motorsport categories, including 13 victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and four World Rally Championship titles. The team will be led by former Red Bull sporting director Jonathan Wheatley as team principal, with ex-Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto serving as CEO.

The 2026 Grid Takes Shape

Audi is one of two completely new constructors joining the grid this year, with Cadillac becoming the sport's 11th team. The American outfit, owned by General Motors, will initially use Ferrari engines until at least 2029.

Further change comes from Ford, which partners with Red Bull to create Red Bull-Ford Powertrains, marking the first time the reigning champions have built their own engine. Red Bull and its sister team, Racing Bulls, will unveil their 2026 liveries at Ford's headquarters in Detroit next Thursday.

The testing calendar is now firmly in view. Barcelona will host a private test for all 11 teams from 26-30 January, followed by two official three-day tests in Bahrain during February. The competitive action then begins with the 2026 season opener, the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, on 8 March.
