Mercedes Formula 1 driver Kimi Antonelli has been involved in a serious car crash near his residence in San Marino, resulting in significant damage to his brand-new £180,000 company vehicle. The incident occurred on Saturday night along the San Marino highway, close to Serravelle Castle, with the 19-year-old emerging completely unscathed from the high-speed accident.
Details of the High-Speed Collision
Reports from San Marino indicate that the crash involved multiple collisions over an extensive distance, suggesting it happened at considerable speed. According to San Marino TV, the first impact was against a traffic pole on one side of the road. From there, the car was propelled towards the centre of the highway, striking the guardrail twice before finally crashing into a retaining wall on the opposite side.
Police Investigation Underway
The trajectory of the crash spanned an impressive 144 metres, prompting a thorough investigation by local police. Authorities are examining all aspects of the incident to determine the exact cause and circumstances surrounding the dramatic event.
Mercedes Confirms Driver's Safety
In a brief official statement, Mercedes confirmed the incident while emphasising their driver's wellbeing. "Last Saturday evening, near his home in San Marino, Kimi was involved in a road accident," the statement began. "The police attended the scene after being called by Kimi. His was the only car involved and, although the vehicle sustained damage, Kimi was completely unharmed."
Brand-New Luxury Vehicle Destroyed
The accident occurred less than a week after Antonelli received his new company car, which had been proudly showcased on Mercedes' official Instagram channel. The vehicle in question was a Mercedes AMG GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+ 'Motorsport Collectors Edition' – an extremely limited production model with only 200 units manufactured worldwide.
The standard version of this high-performance car carries a price tag of approximately £180,000 and boasts impressive acceleration capabilities, reaching 0-62mph in just 3.2 seconds. The destruction of such a valuable and rare vehicle adds another layer of significance to this already dramatic incident involving one of Formula 1's promising young talents.
