The world of motorsport is in mourning after the tragic death of NASCAR champion Greg Biffle, his wife Cristina, their two children, and three others in a devastating private jet crash. The accident occurred on Thursday morning at Statesville Regional Airport in North Carolina, claiming seven lives in total.
Chilling Final Message Revealed
In a heartbreaking new detail, Cristina Biffle's mother, Cathy Grossu, has revealed her daughter sent a terrifying text message just minutes before the plane went down. The message, containing only three words – 'We're in trouble' – was the last communication from the group. Speaking through tears to People magazine, Grossu said the family is 'devastated' and 'brokenhearted' by the loss.
The Cessna C550 jet, owned by the 55-year-old racing driver, crashed on the runway at around 10:15 am local time while attempting to land. The aircraft, which was bound for Sarasota, Florida, was seen engulfed in flames as emergency crews rushed to the scene, located about 45 minutes from Charlotte.
Victims of the Tragedy
A statement from the families confirmed the identities of all seven victims. They are:
- Greg Biffle, former NASCAR Cup Series driver and champion.
- Cristina Biffle, his wife.
- Ryder Biffle, their five-year-old son.
- Emma Biffle, Greg's daughter.
- Craig Wadsworth, another figure from the NASCAR community.
- Dennis Dutton and his son, Jack Dutton.
Cathy Grossu shared that the group was travelling to Florida for a birthday celebration. 'To think that they would be killed on a birthday trip, that was just such a fun time for the family,' she said. 'And to see the horrific way that it ended, it's just, it is so hard to bear.'
Investigation and Tributes
Analysis of public flight data by a local meteorologist indicated the plane took off, then circled back before the fatal landing attempt, suggesting a possible mechanical issue. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has confirmed the crash occurred during an attempted landing and an investigation is underway.
NASCAR issued an emotional statement, describing Biffle as 'a beloved member of the NASCAR community, a fierce competitor, and a friend to so many.' The organisation highlighted not only his racing championships in the Xfinity and Truck Series but also his charitable work, notably his efforts aiding North Carolina residents in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.
Grossu recounted seeing her daughter and son-in-law just hours before the flight, lamenting that she cannot recall their final words. 'I know we hugged, but I don't remember those last words and that's going to haunt me,' she said. 'But they were happy.' The community now rallies to support the grieving families as the investigation into this shocking tragedy continues.
