Lewis Hamilton has emphatically declared that he is "back" and operating at his peak performance level after securing the very first podium finish of his Ferrari Formula One career at Sunday's Chinese Grand Prix. The British racing icon, who made a high-profile switch from Mercedes to the Italian marque, crossed the line in third place, ending a 477-day podium drought that stretched back to the Las Vegas Grand Prix in November 2024.
A Podium Long in the Making
Hamilton's journey to this moment has been fraught with difficulty. His opening campaign with Ferrari was, by his own admission, a "horror" show. At one particularly low point, the seven-time world champion described himself as "useless" and even suggested the team should consider replacing him. This stark contrast makes his Chinese Grand Prix result all the more significant, representing his finest performance yet in the famous red livery.
Mercedes Dominance and a Teenage Sensation
The race was won by 19-year-old Kimi Antonelli, driving for Mercedes, who became Formula One's second-youngest winner ever, trailing only Max Verstappen in the record books. Antonelli's composed drive, despite a late scare where he ran wide, saw him dislodge Sebastian Vettel from the all-time list. His Mercedes teammate, George Russell, finished second, extending his lead over Antonelli in the championship standings to four points.
"I am speechless," an emotional Antonelli said post-race. "I want to cry to be honest. I gave myself a heart attack at the end, but I have achieved my dream."
Hamilton's Resurgence and Renewed Belief
Hamilton attributes his revival to the new generation of Formula One cars, which are smaller, lighter, and nimbler, reminiscent of the machinery from his most dominant years. Combined with an intensely focused winter training regimen—the most rigorous of his career—the 41-year-old feels reborn.
"I definitely feel like I am back, both mentally and physically, to my best," Hamilton stated. "But I still feel there is room to improve. This podium has taken longer than I had hoped. After a difficult year, to be able to develop and work on this season's car gives me huge pride."
Strategic Mindset and Future Goals
The veteran driver revealed that he made a pivotal decision on Christmas Day regarding his mental approach for the new season. "I decided on Christmas Day how I was going to start this season, and what I was going to do mentally, and I am going to continue to tweak that and there is more to come," he explained.
This renewed mindset has shifted his perspective on winning. "A first win is more in sight than ever before and last year it could not have been further from view," Hamilton asserted, expressing strong belief in the Ferrari team at Maranello. "I really do believe in everyone at Maranello and that it (Mercedes' advantage) is not an impossible feat to overcome."
On-Track Battles and Mutual Respect
Starting third on the grid, Hamilton initially seized the lead with a lightning start before the superior pace of the Mercedes cars told. The most thrilling battle of his race was a fierce, wheel-to-wheel duel with Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc for the final podium spot. The pair swapped positions six times in a display of intense but clean racing.
"It felt like go-karting, back and forth, back and forth," Hamilton recounted. "There was one moment that we did touch, but it was subtle, just a kiss. There was a thin piece of paper between us at times, but we did not exchange any paint and that is down to great drivers and respect."
Looking Ahead with Full Gas
While acknowledging Ferrari is not yet where they ultimately want to be, Hamilton sees a solid foundation. "I know it is not exactly where we want to be but we have a great platform to work off and we have to be full gas," he declared, signaling his intent to push relentlessly for that elusive first victory with Ferrari in the races to come.
