Jockey, 32, Dies After Tragic Fall and Trampling at Philippine Racecourse
Jockey dies in tragic fall at Philippine racecourse

The horse racing community in the Philippines is in mourning following the tragic death of a jockey during a race meeting at the weekend.

The Incident at Hapi Jockey Club

Elvin Abrea, aged 32, suffered fatal injuries after a horrific accident during the sixth race at the Hapi Jockey Club meeting in Padre Garcia. The venue is the Philippines' sole racecourse and had only been in operation since November last year.

Abrea was riding the horse Fly With The Wind in a field of seven runners. According to the official stewards' report, as Abrea shifted his mount to the right, it appeared to clip the heels of the horse in front, Magnolia Ariana. This caused Fly With The Wind to trip, throwing Abrea heavily to the ground.

A Fatal Trampling

Tragically, as the 32-year-old jockey lay on the track, he was galloped over by another horse that was following closely behind. The incident occurred near the 1000-metre marker during the race on Saturday.

The Philippine Jockey Club later confirmed in an official statement that Abrea had not survived his injuries. The jockey had ridden one winner at the new course since its opening.

Racing Cancelled and Community in Mourning

In the wake of the tragedy, the race meeting scheduled for Sunday was cancelled. Racing commissioners stated that Abrea's death had created a 'deeply sombre' atmosphere amongst jockeys, trainers, and officials.

The Philippine Jockey Club's statement extended its 'deepest and sincerest condolences' to Abrea's family, loved ones, and the wider racing fraternity. It praised his 'dedication, bravery, and passion for horse racing', vowing that he would be remembered with respect and gratitude.

The club added that it stands in solidarity with the bereaved family during this time of profound loss as they honour his life and service to the sport.
