Wheatley Leaves Audi Amid Aston Martin F1 Issues

Jonathan Wheatley has left his role as team principal at Audi, the Formula One team confirmed on Tuesday, clearing the path for his anticipated move to the same position at Aston Martin. Wheatley, who spent nearly 20 years at Red Bull before joining Audi (formerly Sauber) just over a year ago, is expected to take the helm at Aston Martin as the team struggles with a disastrous start to the season.

Aston Martin have failed to finish a single race this season due to severe vibration problems with their Honda engine. The issue damages batteries and transfers vibration into the chassis, with team principal Adrian Newey admitting it risks causing permanent nerve damage to drivers. At the last round in China, Fernando Alonso retired the car, saying he could not feel his hands and feet.

Newey, the pre-eminent designer of his generation, took on the role of team principal last November alongside his position as managing technical partner, after issues with predecessor Andy Cowell. Allowing Newey to step back from the forward-facing role would let him refocus on technical and design areas. Cowell remains as chief strategy officer, working with Honda to address the engine problems.

Audi stated that Wheatley leaves with immediate effect, and former Ferrari chief Mattia Binotto will continue to lead the team while taking on additional responsibilities as team principal. The team thanked Wheatley for his contribution and wished him well.

Aston Martin have not confirmed Wheatley's arrival, nor whether he will serve a period of gardening leave. However, owner Lawrence Stroll issued a statement emphasising commitment to Newey while leaving room for Wheatley in a senior position, noting the team does not adopt a traditional team principal role by design.
