In a significant and unexpected shake-up, the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team has announced the departure of its long-serving chief car designer, John Owen.
A Surprise Exit on the Eve of a New Era
The news comes as a major surprise to the Formula 1 world, landing just six weeks before the start of the 2026 F1 season. Owen, a highly respected aerodynamicist, has been a cornerstone of the Brackley-based squad's technical department for 19 years, having joined in 2007.
During his illustrious tenure, Owen's work was integral to one of the most dominant periods in the sport's history. He played a key role in designing the cars that secured nine constructors' championships and eight drivers' titles for the Silver Arrows.
Ensuring a Smooth Handover
Despite the timing, the team confirmed that the design of its 2026 challenger is well advanced. Owen will now enter a period of gardening leave, a standard practice in F1, after ensuring a smooth transition to his successor.
Giacomo Tortora has been promoted to the role of Director of Car Design, stepping up to fill the void. The technical group will be overseen by Deputy Technical Director Simone Resta.
What This Means for Mercedes' Future
Owen's departure marks the end of a defining chapter for Mercedes F1. His exit, following that of other senior figures in recent years, represents a further evolution of the team's technical structure as it prepares for the new 2026 regulations.
The promotion of Tortora indicates a confidence in the existing team's depth and continuity. All eyes will now be on how this reshaped technical department performs under pressure, with the 2026 car launch and subsequent season fast approaching.
