Norris Backs Verstappen to Stay in F1 After Rule Changes

Lando Norris has voiced his confidence that Max Verstappen will continue to compete in Formula One, despite the four-time world champion's vocal dissatisfaction with this season's new regulations. Norris, the defending world champion, emphasised that Verstappen's departure would be a significant loss for the sport, given his status as one of the greatest drivers in F1 history.

Verstappen's Concerns and Rule Adjustments

Verstappen has been openly critical of the new regulations, which focus heavily on electrical energy management, now accounting for almost 50% of a car's power output. His frustrations led to suggestions that he might leave the sport, but recent adjustments by the FIA aim to address these concerns. Norris noted that with Verstappen expressing a desire to win a fifth world championship, he is likely to stay longer than some anticipate.

Impact on the Sport

"It would be a shame for the sport, it would be a miss for the sport if that does happen because he probably is one of the best drivers you'll see in Formula One ever," Norris stated. He added that racing against Verstappen, despite the challenges, is enjoyable and a privilege, as it allows drivers to compete against the best in the world.

Regulatory Changes and Driver Reactions

On Monday, F1 announced changes to the regulations, set to take effect at the next round in Miami on 3 May. These adjustments focus on energy recovery management during qualifying and racing, aiming to improve the driving experience. Norris and his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri have expressed cautious optimism about these changes.

Piastri highlighted that the main concerns addressed were reinstating the challenge in qualifying and reducing speed differences in races. "The FIA took it very seriously. F1 took it very seriously. I think that's reflected in some of the changes and the dialogue's been very good," he said.

Norris's Openness to Questions

Norris has been more open in discussing these topics recently, after an incident last week where his management team halted an interview when questions about the new regulations or rival drivers like Verstappen and George Russell were raised. Norris apologised for this stance and has since embraced all inquiries, as seen during an event at the McLaren technology centre in Woking.

He continues to maintain a friendly and transparent relationship with the media, underscoring his commitment to engaging with fans and the press on key issues affecting Formula One.
