Lando Norris and Luke Littler Miss BBC SPOTY Awards 2025
Why Norris & Littler missed BBC Sports Personality awards

Two of Britain's biggest sporting stars were notable absentees from the prestigious BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards ceremony this week. Newly crowned Formula 1 world champion Lando Norris and reigning world darts champion Luke Littler both missed the event in Salford, despite being named on the prestigious six-person shortlist.

Norris Celebrates Title with Ski Trip

The McLaren driver, who secured his maiden F1 Drivers' Championship in a dramatic finale in Abu Dhabi less than two weeks ago, apologised for his absence via a live video link. Norris revealed he was away on a skiing holiday, enjoying his off-season and continuing to celebrate his historic title win. The 26-year-old Briton addressed the audience remotely, saying: "Hello everyone, good evening. Sorry I can't be with you tonight. I'm enjoying a little break at the moment. I've had a really enjoyable year."

Littler Focuses on Darts Defence

Luke Littler, who finished as runner-up in the Sports Personality of the Year voting last year, also chose not to attend the ceremony on Thursday, 18 December 2025. The 18-year-old darts sensation is currently focused on defending his PDC World Darts Championship title at Alexandra Palace. He had previously indicated he did not believe he was in contention for the main award this time around.

Following his opening victory in the tournament, Littler stated: "No, I'm not going to it. I think they (the BBC) know. I think obviously the people in the top three on the betting odds will obviously go there. I think Lando will win. But good luck to whoever's going to win it."

Full Shortlist in Attendance

The other four athletes on the shortlist all attended the event in person. They were golfer Rory McIlroy and footballers Chloe Kelly, Hannah Hampton, and Ellie Kildunne. The absence of Norris and Littler meant the ceremony proceeded without two of the year's most high-profile British champions, though Norris's victory was acknowledged via his digital appearance.

The 2025 BBC Sports Personality of the Year ceremony highlighted a remarkable year in British sport, albeit with two of its leading figures celebrating their successes away from the spotlight. Norris's F1 triumph and Littler's continued darts dominance remain key talking points as the sporting year draws to a close.
