Williams F1 Withdraws from Barcelona Pre-Season Test Due to FW48 Delays
Williams F1 Misses Barcelona Test Over FW48 Car Delays

Williams Formula 1 team principal James Vowles has confirmed the squad's withdrawal from the first pre-season test in Barcelona, describing the decision as "incredibly painful" for the historic outfit.

Strategic Withdrawal Due to FW48 Complexities

The withdrawal stems from significant delays in the development of the FW48 car, which Vowles revealed is approximately three times more complicated than previous Williams models. This heightened complexity has presented unforeseen challenges in the build and preparation phase.

A Calculated Decision to Protect Season Start

Vowles explained that missing the Barcelona test was a deliberate, strategic choice. The primary aim was to avoid compromising the availability of spare components for the opening races of the 2026 season. By prioritising long-term readiness over short-term track time, the team hopes to ensure a more competitive start when the championship begins.

Progress and Confidence for Bahrain

Despite this initial setback, Williams has reported positive progress. The team has now successfully passed all mandatory FIA crash tests for the new car, a critical safety milestone.

Focus has now shifted to the second and final pre-season test, scheduled for 11-13 February in Bahrain. Vowles expressed strong confidence in the 2026 challenger, asserting it is "the best Williams has produced" during his tenure as team principal.

Unified Team Support

In a show of internal solidarity, Vowles confirmed that the team's drivers fully support his difficult decision to withdraw from the Barcelona session. This alignment is seen as crucial for maintaining team morale and focus as they prepare for the imminent Bahrain test and the season ahead.
