Austin Appelbee, along with his mother Joanne and siblings Beau, 12, and Grace, 8, were enjoying a day of kayaking and paddleboarding in Geographe Bay when strong winds unexpectedly pushed them approximately 14 kilometres from the shore. The family found themselves stranded in open water, facing a perilous situation with no immediate means of returning to safety.
A Superhuman Effort to Raise the Alarm
Realising the gravity of their predicament, Austin made the brave decision to swim to shore to seek help. He embarked on a gruelling four-hour swim through challenging conditions, a feat that medical professionals have since compared to the physical exertion of running two marathons. Upon reaching land, exhausted but determined, Austin then ran an additional 2 kilometres to their accommodation to call emergency services.
