Olympic Champion Stephanie Rice Returns to Dubai Amid Iranian Drone Strikes
Australian Olympic champion Stephanie Rice has flown back to the Middle East to reunite with her husband, Mark Lassey, in a dramatic journey that coincided with Iranian drone strikes near Dubai International Airport. The three-time gold medallist, who has been living in the United Arab Emirates since November 2023, had been in Australia since the outbreak of conflict involving the USA, Israel, and Iran, while her husband remained in Dubai.
Instagram Posts Reveal Emotional Departure
Rice announced her return to Dubai through two Instagram stories posted on Wednesday night. In a heartfelt caption accompanying a selfie from her flight at 10.20pm AEST, she wrote, 'A week delayed, but it's time to go home. Thank you for your prayers.' She had previously expressed her longing for her husband and asked followers to pray for loved ones in the UAE.
The Olympian's second story showed her passing through the departures gate at Melbourne Airport, highlighting the personal stakes of her journey. Her posts were published almost simultaneously with reports that four people were injured in an Iranian drone attack close to Dubai Airport, raising concerns about the timing and safety of her travel.
Escalating Conflict Disrupts Travel and Energy Routes
The war in the Middle East has significantly impacted global energy routes and travel, as Iran, Israel, and the US continue to exchange strikes across the Gulf region. On Wednesday, Iranian drones targeted several commercial ships in the Persian Gulf and struck near Dubai International Airport.
Further incidents unfolded on Thursday morning, Australian time, when a high-rise building in Dubai caught fire after being hit by an Iranian drone near Dubai Creek Harbour, approximately five miles from the airport. Earlier, a projectile struck a Thai cargo ship off the coast of Oman in the Strait of Hormuz, setting it ablaze and prompting a search for three missing crew members after 20 were rescued by the Omani navy.
Iran's actions have effectively halted cargo traffic in the narrow strait, which handles about one-fifth of the world's oil shipments. The regime is targeting oil fields and refineries in Gulf Arab nations, aiming to inflict enough global economic pain to pressure the United States and Israel to cease their strikes.
Rice's Personal Life in Dubai
Rice met Mark Lassey soon after relocating to Dubai, a city of four million people. Their whirlwind seven-month romance culminated in a proposal at Dubai's Atlantis Royal Hotel in September 2024. Since moving, Rice, a devout Christian, has joined the Kingdom City church and spoken openly about her newfound dedication to religion.
In a reflective post, she wrote, 'I honestly never thought I would be this person turning up on prayer nights, on my own, in a new country, connecting with a community through a church. But here I am and gosh it is so special and has helped me feel so supported in this new home in Dubai.'
As travel disruptions continue, with Dutch airline KLM cancelling all flights to Dubai until March 28, it remains unclear whether Rice intended to land in Dubai or at an alternative airport in the region. Her journey underscores the personal risks and emotional toll of the ongoing Middle East conflict on individuals caught in its crossfire.
