The chief executive of the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics has openly acknowledged that the event's final costs have significantly surpassed initial budget forecasts, following a series of demanding and unexpected challenges during the preparation phase. Andrea Varnier, the Games' CEO, delivered his final progress report to the International Olympic Committee on Tuesday, confirming that organisers have been operating under intense pressure with extremely tight deadlines.
Financial Strain and Escalating Budgets
Mr Varnier revealed that the financial situation for the organising committee has been extremely difficult throughout the planning years, with the original operational budget ballooning from approximately $1.3 billion to more than $1.7 billion. This substantial increase does not even include the additional infrastructure expenditures, which involve a further $3.5 billion in public funding allocated for associated projects.
"The financial situation of our organising committee has been extremely difficult throughout the years," Varnier stated during his address. "We must, however, acknowledge that the Games cost more than initially foreseen in the candidature budget."
Construction Challenges and Venue Delays
Organisers have been racing against time to finalise several competition venues ahead of Friday's opening ceremony, with two facilities presenting particular difficulties. The newly constructed sliding centre in Cortina, which replaced originally planned temporary or existing venues, became a major point of contention with the IOC, who had advocated for using facilities in neighbouring countries like Austria, Switzerland, France, or Germany.
Similarly, the Santagiulia ice hockey stadium only underwent testing in January, leaving organisers working under what Varnier described as "emergency conditions" with "extremely tight deadlines." The CEO noted that both venues were "delivered literally to the organising committee at the final breath at the very edge of every available deadline."
Acknowledging Compromises and Looking Forward
Varnier conceded that the final event might not meet all original expectations, telling the IOC session: "You will not find in these Games everything you might have expected or everything we originally wanted to have." He described the preparation journey as "even more arduous than initially imagined," with challenges that were both expected and unexpected.
Despite the financial pressures and construction hurdles, the CEO expressed optimism about the Games' legacy, concluding: "Nevertheless both venues will be outstanding for the Games and we hope they will remain as tangible legacies for the communities." The admission comes as organisers complete final preparations for what promises to be a challenging but potentially rewarding Winter Olympics for Italy.
