Worker dies in freezing conditions at Winter Olympics site

A security guard has died in sub-zero conditions at a construction site linked to the upcoming 2026 Winter Olympic Games, casting a shadow over preparations for the major sporting event.

Fatal Incident in Extreme Cold

Authorities in Italy have confirmed the death of a 55-year-old worker during an overnight shift near the mountain resort of Cortina d'Ampezzo. The tragedy occurred on Thursday, with local reports stating temperatures had plunged to a bitter -12C (10.4F).

The worker was on duty at a site close to Cortina's ice arena, a venue set to be used in the forthcoming Games. Italy's Infrastructure Minister, Matteo Salvini, has called for a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.

Olympic Organisers Respond

In a statement, Simico, the government company responsible for Olympic infrastructure, expressed its condolences but clarified that the site in question was not under its direct supervision. Officials from the city of Cortina said they were "deeply saddened and troubled by the death".

The Milano Cortina Winter Olympics are scheduled to run from 6 to 22 February 2026. The resort of Cortina is slated to host events including curling, sliding, and women's Alpine skiing.

Preparations Continue Amid Tragedy

Despite the sombre news, preparations for the Games continue. Organisers recently announced that the world-renowned tenor Andrea Bocelli will join pop icon Mariah Carey as a headline performer at the opening ceremony.

Reflecting the widely dispersed nature of these Winter Games, the opening ceremony will be a multi-location event. Key moments will be broadcast from:

  • Cortina d'Ampezzo in the Dolomites.
  • Livigno in the Italian Alps.
  • Predazzo in the autonomous province of Trento.

This innovative format is designed to allow athletes from all the far-flung competition venues to participate. The ceremony at Milan's San Siro stadium will also feature a tribute to the late Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani, who passed away in September aged 91.
