Essendon's Matt Guelfi Makes Relationship with British Model Freya Tai Public at Melbourne Event
One of the Australian Football League's most eligible bachelors is officially off the market, with Essendon star Matt Guelfi stepping out publicly with his new girlfriend, British model Freya Tai. The Bombers midfielder debuted the relationship at a high-profile Melbourne event, arriving alongside Tai at the 9MILE x Baby Driver pop-up launch in the city's central business district recently.
A Shift in Public Image for the Private AFL Star
Guelfi, who had long been considered one of the league's most sought-after single stars, appeared relaxed and confident alongside the brunette model, who is understood to be signed to multiple international agencies. The couple reunited in Melbourne, with Guelfi returning to full training after undergoing hamstring surgery in February. Their public appearance marked the first time the pair have been seen together at an official event.
They were joined by a star-studded crowd including AFL star Toby Pink and wife Chloe, Zac Williams and wife Rachel, and Jo Weston. The Detroit-style pop-up pizza event provided the perfect backdrop for the couple's debut, with great food and bespoke cocktails on offer.
Guelfi's relationship reveal marks a significant shift in the public image of the 29-year-old, who had previously kept his private life largely out of the spotlight. Earlier in his career, the Essendon favourite offered a glimpse into his personality during a club Q&A, revealing a more reserved side when it came to romance. When he was asked to name what scares him, he replied, 'Getting into a relationship.'
Building a Profile Beyond Football
Off the field, the Bomber has steadily built his profile beyond football, attending major events such as the Melbourne Formula One Grand Prix, and taking part in modelling work for local brands. Rumours about his romance with Tai began to swirl when it was revealed that Guelfi was following her on social media, though the couple had previously kept their relationship out of public view.
While Guelfi is kicking plenty of goals off the field, Essendon has come under extreme scrutiny for its lacklustre start to the season. Club great Matthew Lloyd has blasted the Bombers, agreeing they are a demoralised side that's not performing at AFL standard after heavy losses to the Hawks and Power.
Essendon's On-Field Struggles Contrast with Personal Milestone
Coach Brad Scott admitted the winless team lacks defensive intensity, saying, 'There's no doubt we're demoralised.' He added the group is 'not hard-nosed enough in defence', with issues spread across the entire ground. Lloyd said the bigger concern is how early in the season the struggles have emerged, calling their form alarming.
'They've played with no passion … it's not AFL level, it's not AFL standard,' he said. He believes the team is low on confidence and lacks belief, intent and understanding in their game. Lloyd also said the Bombers are relying too heavily on younger players, with little impact from senior leaders.
Essendon now face mounting pressure ahead of a clash with North Melbourne, with both sides struggling for consistency. Guelfi, who has played 121 matches for the club, returns to the field amid these challenges, with his personal life now more publicly visible than ever before.
