England Cricketer Ben Duckett Confronts Three-Year IPL Suspension Following Ashes Controversy
England cricket star Ben Duckett is confronting a potential three-year ban from the Indian Premier League after withdrawing from the 2026 edition and issuing a public apology for a drunken incident during the Ashes series. The 31-year-old batsman, who has never played in the IPL, was scheduled to represent Delhi Capitals on a lucrative £200,000 per season contract but has informed team management of his decision to step away.
Winter of Discontent: Ashes Struggles and Off-Field Embarrassment
Duckett's withdrawal comes after what he described as a winter that "couldn't really have gone much worse" for his international career. His lacklustre performances as an opening batsman were among the most significant disappointments for England during their hapless 4-1 Ashes defeat in Australia. The Nottinghamshire star faced further embarrassment when a video surfaced online appearing to show him intoxicated during a night out in Noosa, Queensland, while England trailed 2-0 in the series.
The incident prompted an investigation by the England and Wales Cricket Board, with Duckett expressing remorse for his actions. "I am sorry for that incident, it was not professional and shouldn't have happened. There is no hiding away from it," Duckett told the Telegraph. He described the build-up to the Boxing Day Test as "one of the toughest moments of my career" but expressed gratitude for support from England management and managing director Rob Key.
Career Crossroads: World Cup Omission and Future Uncertainty
The cricketer's troubles extended beyond the Ashes, as he recently travelled to India and Sri Lanka for the T20 World Cup without playing a single match, leaving him to question his England future across all formats. "Not playing in the World Cup, and being on the sidelines in India after such a tough Ashes series was a struggle for me," Duckett admitted. However, he added that the experience has "lit a massive fire in my belly moving forward."
Duckett reflected on his dramatic career trajectory, noting: "Going from how I was being spoken about during the India series [last summer], to how I am spoken about now. That's a ridiculously big dip." He acknowledged learning from both his successes and failures, stating he would apply these lessons "if and when I am playing my best again."
Personal Milestones Amid Professional Setbacks
Despite the professional disappointments, Duckett highlighted personal happiness from his October marriage, though he lamented how his sporting aspirations had unraveled. "Everything I had done for four years was building to that moment. And this could have been the best 12 months of my life," he explained. "I got married in October, then hoped to win the Ashes down under, play a World Cup and win that. That was my vision at the start of the winter. The getting married bit is there, and I'm so happy about that! But after that? It couldn't really have gone much worse."
The cricketer remains signed to play for Trent Rockets in this summer's Hundred competition, providing a potential platform for his career rehabilitation. His withdrawal from the IPL represents a significant financial and professional sacrifice as he attempts to reboot his international prospects following a challenging period both on and off the pitch.
