Chelsea Manager Delivers Crucial Fitness News Before Selhurst Park Trip
Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior has delivered an encouraging injury bulletin concerning four key players ahead of this weekend's Premier League encounter with Crystal Palace. The update focuses on the fitness of star attacker Cole Palmer, midfield linchpin Enzo Fernandez, and young talents Jamie Gittens and Estevao.
Positive Signs for Key Quartet After Illness and Injury Concerns
Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Friday, Rosenior confirmed that Palmer, who missed the midweek victory over Pafos due to thigh tightness, has returned to training. "Cole is in a good place. He joined in training today, which is really positive and we will assess his reaction to training after the session," stated the 41-year-old manager.
Regarding the trio affected by illness during their appearances against Pafos, Rosenior provided reassuring news. "In terms of sickness, the players hit by that are gradually coming back to full health," he explained. "We've had to be very careful with that because Estevao was very ill, Jamie Gittens was very ill, and it altered our plans over the week. Thankfully the lads have come through that, and so has Enzo as well."
The manager confirmed that Fernandez, Gittens, and Estevao all participated in training this week and are expected to be available for selection against Patrick Vieira's Eagles.
Mixed News on Other Fitness Fronts at Cobham
While the update on the attacking quartet was broadly positive, Rosenior's briefing included some concerning news about other squad members. Goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen remains sidelined until at least Chelsea's midweek Champions League fixture against Napoli, though his scan results offered some consolation.
"Jorgensen has had his scan, and it was actually quite positive and not as bad as we first feared," revealed Rosenior.
More troubling was the news regarding young defender Dario Essugo, who sustained a significant injury during a training session. "Dario has picked up a really unfortunate injury. He slipped in training and he's going to be out for a while. We expect him to be out for over a month," confirmed the Chelsea manager.
There was more encouraging progress to report on midfielder Romeo Lavia's recovery from long-term absence. "Romeo is on the way back, which is great because he's a very good, outstanding player at a very high level. I want him back as quickly as possible, of course, but I want him back with no more injuries," added Rosenior.
Crucial Period for Chelsea's European Ambitions
The fitness updates arrive at a critical juncture for Chelsea's season. The Blues travel to Selhurst Park on Sunday afternoon knowing victory could potentially lift them into the Premier League's top four, depending on results elsewhere. Maintaining proximity to Champions League qualification remains a primary objective for Rosenior's squad.
Following the Palace fixture, Chelsea face another significant test with a trip to Napoli on Wednesday evening. That Champions League encounter represents their final opportunity to secure a place in the competition's top eight during the league phase, adding further importance to having key players available.
Rosenior's careful management of returning players will be tested during this demanding period, with the manager emphasising both immediate needs and long-term player welfare in his assessment of the squad's fitness situation.
