Jack Draper Triumphs Over Novak Djokovic in Indian Wells Thriller
British tennis sensation Jack Draper expressed feeling "overwhelmed" after securing his maiden victory against Novak Djokovic, propelling him into the quarter-finals of the prestigious Indian Wells tournament. The defending champion showcased remarkable resilience, fighting back from a set down to clinch a nail-biting win in a deciding tie-break.
A Gruelling Battle on the Court
The match, which extended over two-and-a-half hours, saw Draper emerge victorious with a scoreline of 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5). This encounter marked only their second meeting, following a previous clash at Wimbledon five years ago. Djokovic initially gained the upper hand by breaking serve in the final game of the opening set, but Draper demonstrated tenacity by levelling the match in the second set.
As the decider unfolded, Djokovic began to show signs of fatigue, with numerous gruelling points taking their toll. Despite holding serve in an intense opening game featuring a 26-shot rally, he was broken in the subsequent game. Draper, who has recently returned from an eight-month arm injury hiatus, faced a momentary setback when attempting to serve out the match at 5-4, but he quickly regrouped to seal the victory on his first match point in the tie-break.
Draper's Emotional Reaction and Future Prospects
In a post-match press conference in California, Draper described the contest as "a crazy match" and expressed profound admiration for his opponent. "Just overwhelmed to obviously beat Novak, someone I have watched and admired and idolised since I was a kid," he stated. "Just very grateful to be in this situation and go again tomorrow."
Looking ahead, Draper is set to face in-form 11th seed Daniil Medvedev on Thursday evening. Reflecting on his performance, he acknowledged areas for improvement, particularly in his mental approach on the court. "It's tough when you haven't been on the match court for a while, especially against top, top players in the world again. They make you feel uncomfortable," Draper remarked. "And, even though today is a big win, it's also a small win in my recovery and coming back to playing and being the type of player I want to become."
Djokovic's Praise and Other Tournament Highlights
Djokovic graciously commended Draper's performance, noting, "He's playing really well. He's confident and he was always confident and physically very fit. Just overall a great player, great guy. I wish him all the best for the rest of the tournament."
In other news from Indian Wells, Cameron Norrie advanced to the quarter-finals by defeating Australian qualifier Rinky Hijikata, setting up a rematch with world number one Carlos Alcaraz. Although Alcaraz is on a 15-match winning streak, Norrie has previously secured three victories in their eight encounters, including their most recent meeting at the Paris Masters in November.
However, British hopes were tempered as Sonay Kartal was unable to join Draper and Norrie in the last eight. Struggling with a persistent back injury sustained earlier in the tournament, Kartal retired during her match against Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina, trailing 6-4, 4-3. She lamented, "Today it was unfortunately one match too many. A super tough opponent, so you need to be at your best. I was far from that but still managed to make it competitive." Rybakina will now face fifth seed Jessica Pegula, while second seed Iga Swiatek advanced smoothly to meet Elina Svitolina.
