Eben Etzebeth gets 12-week ban for eye gouge

Springboks Star Handed Significant Suspension for Foul Play

South African rugby has been rocked by a significant disciplinary decision as veteran lock Eben Etzebeth has been suspended for 12 weeks. The punishment follows a red card for eye-gouging Wales flanker Alex Mann during a Test match in Cardiff.

The incident occurred last Saturday during a one-sided contest that finished 73-0 in favour of the Springboks. Match officials reviewed footage of the clash and subsequently showed Etzebeth a red card.

Disciplinary Committee Finds Intentional Contact

A subsequent independent disciplinary hearing was convened to examine the event. The committee concluded that the contact made with Alex Mann's eye area was intentional.

This finding led to an initial entry point sanction of 18 weeks, which is standard for offences of this seriousness under World Rugby's regulations.

However, the panel did apply mitigation. Due to Etzebeth's relatively clean disciplinary record and his partial admission of guilt, the ban was reduced by six weeks, resulting in the final 12-week suspension.

Club and International Consequences

The ban has immediate and costly repercussions for the player and his teams. As the most-capped Springbok in history, Etzebeth's absence is a major blow.

He is now scheduled to return to the field in April 2025, meaning he will miss a substantial part of the upcoming campaign for his club side, the Sharks, in the United Rugby Championship.

The decision underscores the game's continued zero-tolerance approach towards actions that risk serious injury, particularly those involving the eyes. It serves as a stark reminder to all players of the severe consequences for such dangerous play.
