Emotional George North Breaks Down in Final Interview

George North, the Welsh rugby legend, broke down in tears during a live post-match interview on S4C after playing the final game of his professional career on Saturday. The 34-year-old represented the Barbarians against Wales at Twickenham, scoring two tries and earning the Player of the Match award in a 33-31 loss.

Emotional Farewell

North, who made 121 appearances for Wales, won four Six Nations titles, and toured twice with the British & Irish Lions, was visibly emotional as he spoke to presenter Sarra Elgan. He struggled to compose himself, reflecting on a difficult year and the support he has received throughout his career.

"It's been a very difficult year," North said, his voice breaking. "I thought I'd already played my last game." As Elgan reminded him of his immense contribution to Welsh rugby, tears began to flow, and she reached over to comfort him with a hug.

Memorable Performance

North entered the game as a replacement early in the second half, greeted by cheers and applause from the Twickenham crowd. He made an immediate impact, powering through the Welsh defense to score a try less than two minutes after coming on. He added a second try 10 minutes from time, closing the gap to two points, and even converted Santiago Arata's last-minute try before being embraced by both sets of players.

"I was hoping for three tries," North joked. "I thought my final international game had been, then I got a phone call from Robbie [Deans]. He asked me how the body was. I jumped at the opportunity when he offered it. I'm feeling very emotional."

Gratitude and Reflection

North, supported by his wife Becky and family in the stands, fought to regain his composure as he reflected on his journey. "It's given me everything," he said. "I didn't think there was much chance, growing up in Anglesey. I had to fight every day for my success, but I would change nothing."

After the interview, North was congratulated by former teammates Stephen Jones and Ken Owens, before wiping away tears and walking over to the crowd to sign autographs.
