Glasgow Warriors Dominate Saracens 28-3, Set Up Bulls Clash in Champions Cup Last 16
Glasgow thrash Saracens, face Bulls in Champions Cup

Glasgow Warriors delivered a commanding performance at Scotstoun, defeating Saracens 28-3 in their final Champions Cup pool match. The victory, which included a bonus point, secures them top spot in Pool 1 and a home tie against the South African side, the Bulls, in the round of 16 on the first weekend of April.

Warriors' First-Half Blitz Seals the Deal

The match was effectively decided in a dominant first-half display from the Scottish side. Ollie Smith, Kyle Steyn, and George Horne all crossed for converted tries, building an imposing lead. Saracens' only response in the opening 40 minutes was a solitary penalty from Owen Farrell.

Glasgow's opening try came from a powerful run from Alex Craig, with the backs then working the ball through the hands for Smith to score. The home side's ascendancy was underlined by two quick-fire tries. A neat pass from Horne found Steyn, who ran a perfect diagonal line to score under the posts. Moments later, a rampaging carry from Jack Dempsey set up Horne for the third try.

Saracens' Discipline Falters in Face of Pressure

Saracens' task was made harder when Juan Martín González was shown a yellow card for slapping the ball away. The visitors struggled to contain Glasgow's intensity, with tempers flaring in the dead-ball area after a maul defence. Although Glasgow's Kyle Rowe also saw yellow early in the second half, Saracens could not capitalise.

The home side finished strongly, with Steyn stopped just short before the maul powered replacement Seb Stephen over in the final seconds to secure the bonus point. Saracens' Noah Caluori received a late yellow card in the frantic closing moments.

Consequences for the Knockout Stages

This result means Saracens, as pool runners-up, face a daunting trip to face Premiership champions Bath in the last 16. For Glasgow, the reward for their four successive bonus-point pool wins is a showdown with the Bulls.

In other pivotal Pool 3 action, Marcus Smith's late penalty secured Harlequins a surprise 27-17 victory away to two-time winners La Rochelle. This result eliminated the French giants and allowed Leicester Tigers to progress to the knockout stage. La Rochelle needed only a losing bonus point to qualify but were undone by a late Quins flourish, with Tom Lawday scoring a crucial try.

"The club and myself lost big tonight, it's unacceptable," said a frustrated La Rochelle head coach Ronan O'Gara. "It's especially unacceptable when you see the number of opportunities we had to stay in the competition."

Elsewhere, Northampton Saints' 43-28 victory over Scarlets, featuring a first-half hat-trick from Edoardo Todaro, confirmed their place in the last 16 and sent the Bulls through as well.

The Champions Cup last-16 ties, to be played 3-5 April, are now confirmed:
