Tim Henman Urges Emma Raducanu to Ditch Coaches and Focus on Fitness
Henman: Raducanu Should Go Coachless, Prioritise Physicality

Former British tennis star Tim Henman has proposed a radical solution for Emma Raducanu's career trajectory, suggesting the young player should contemplate operating without a coach entirely. Henman emphasises that Raducanu's primary focus should shift towards enhancing her physical capabilities rather than incessantly adjusting technical aspects of her game.

Raducanu's Coaching Carousel Continues

The 23-year-old Raducanu is currently collaborating temporarily with her previous associate Mark Petchey, as she seeks her tenth career coach following the separation from Francis Roig in January. This frequent turnover in coaching personnel has become a defining characteristic of Raducanu's professional journey, prompting Henman to question the necessity of such arrangements.

Henman's Unconventional Advice

Speaking from the perspective of a former British number one to the current incumbent, Henman articulated his thoughts during an event launching Sky Sports' tennis coverage for 2026. "I wonder whether in some respects she's better off without a coach and just accepting responsibility," Henman remarked. "Perhaps that would enable her to genuinely accept the responsibility for her own game style."

Henman, aged 51, dismissed the extensive discourse surrounding Raducanu's tactical approach as largely irrelevant. He pointed out that disagreements over strategy precipitated the split with Roig, yet he considers this focus misguided. "She's ranked 24th in the world, but many of us believe she possesses the potential to ascend much higher," Henman stated. "Whether it involves changing coaches or encountering physical setbacks, her progress remains too intermittent and fragmented."

The Paramount Importance of Physical Resilience

Henman insists that Raducanu must urgently address her physical conditioning to compete effectively against the sport's elite. "She must become physically more resilient, stronger, and faster to challenge the best players," he asserted. "People attempt to attribute issues to technical modifications, such as her serve or forehand, but that's not the core problem. She triumphed at the US Open, demonstrating her game is fundamentally sound."

He further elaborated that minor adjustments, whether concerning racket specifications or string tension, are inconsequential at this stage. "Observe the physical prowess of players like Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, and Elena Rybakina; Emma currently does not operate at that physical level," Henman noted. "Given her natural physique, she may never fully reach that zenith, but she must strive to narrow the gap significantly."

A Singular Focus on Fitness

Henman advocates for an unwavering concentration on physical development. "I would be focusing wholeheartedly on that physical dimension, ensuring she becomes stronger, hits the ball with greater power, and cultivates enhanced physical resilience," he explained. "This approach would likely reduce the frequency of minor injuries and setbacks that have plagued her career."

He explicitly rejected the prevalent emphasis on technical analysis. "I do not subscribe to all the technical discussions. The priority is becoming fitter, stronger, faster, striking the ball more forcefully, and sustaining that intensity over prolonged periods."

Reflections on Coaching Instability

When questioned about Raducanu's decision to part ways with Roig merely months after agreeing to extend their collaboration for another year, Henman expressed measured surprise. Having observed their dynamic closely in his capacity as Great Britain's United Cup captain at the season's outset, Henman commented, "I was taken aback on one level, but coaches typically do not remain with Emma for extended durations. Francis is an excellent individual and a highly competent coach with vast experience, yet it remains Emma's prerogative."

Henman contrasted his own coaching history with Raducanu's approach. "It's a matter of personal preference. I collaborated with three coaches over fifteen years, valuing consistency and continuity. Emma evidently operates differently. When will we cease being astonished by her coaching alterations, given this is her established pattern?"

Regarding the temporary arrangement with Petchey, Henman acknowledged its limitations. "Petchey is someone with whom she feels at ease, but he has broadcasting obligations, so this cannot evolve into a full-time role. I am uncertain about her subsequent steps, and she probably shares that uncertainty."
