England's Henry Arundell Free to Face Ireland After Avoiding Suspension
England wing Henry Arundell has been cleared to play against Ireland this Saturday after escaping a ban for his red card in the recent match against Scotland. The disciplinary panel determined that his sending off during the game was punishment enough, meaning no further sanctions will be imposed on the Bath flyer.
Disciplinary Decision and Team Selection Implications
The panel reviewed Arundell's case after his red card, which resulted from two yellow cards in Scotland's 31-20 victory. His first yellow was issued in the seventh minute for not releasing during a covering tackle on Rory Darge, while the second came in the 37th minute for taking Kyle Steyn out in the air. This led to a 20-minute red card, forcing England to play with 14 men for half an hour.
Head coach Steve Borthwick had been awaiting the verdict to finalise his team selection, stating he needed "the full picture" before making decisions. With Arundell now available, Borthwick faces a choice on whether to include him after what was described as a disappointing performance at Murrayfield.
Panel's Reasoning and Match Impact
The disciplinary panel noted that Arundell accepted responsibility for two acts of foul play, each warranting a yellow card. They highlighted that the first offence was technical in nature, and the second involved "a very different act of foul play." While upholding the red card, the panel concluded that the sending off itself was a sufficient sanction, making no additional punishment appropriate.
Borthwick commented after the match that playing with 14 men for 30 minutes significantly hurt England's chances, as it gave Scotland too much of a head start. The team struggled to recover from this disadvantage, ultimately contributing to their loss.
This development comes as England prepares for a crucial Six Nations fixture against Ireland, with Arundell's availability adding depth to the squad. His escape from a ban provides a boost, but his selection remains uncertain given the context of his previous outing.
